Why Associations Can’t Afford to Ignore AI

As President and CEO of Redstone Agency, I spend a lot of time talking with association leaders across industries. No matter what the sector, a few themes keep surfacing: a big one is the uncertainty about artificial intelligence.

Some organizations are excited. Others are cautious. And a few are hoping that if they wait long enough, AI will simply become someone else’s problem.

It won’t.

AI is not a passing trend or a niche tool. It is a foundational shift, like the internet or mobile technology, that will reshape how industries operate, how professionals do their work, and how organizations deliver value to their members.

For associations, the question is no longer whether AI matters. It’s whether you are willing to understand it before it reshapes your industry without you.

Every Industry Will Be Touched

AI is already influencing how decisions are made, how services are delivered, and how knowledge is created and shared. From predictive analytics and automation to content generation (perhaps like this blog) and personalized learning, its implications are far-reaching.

For associations, this has direct consequences:

  • How is the work of your members changing?
  • Do they need new skills to conduct their work?
  • Are standards and ethics your members rely on being tested?

If associations exist to support and advance their industries, then understanding AI is no longer optional.

Ignoring AI Is Not a Strategy

It’s understandable that some organizations feel hesitant. AI raises real concerns—about accuracy, ethics, job disruption, and misuse. But choosing to reject it outright or delay engagement is not a protective strategy. It’s a risky one.

History has shown us that industries that resist major technological shifts often find themselves playing catch-up or becoming irrelevant.

Avoiding AI doesn’t slow its adoption. It simply removes your voice from shaping how it’s used.

Understanding Reality AND Limitations

Embracing AI does not mean blindly adopting every tool or trend. In fact, thoughtful engagement is critical.

Associations have an important role to play in helping their industries:

  • Understand what AI can and cannot do
  • Recognize its limitations, biases, and risks
  • Establish ethical frameworks and best practices
  • Provide education and guidance for responsible use

A Moment for Leadership

This is a defining moment for associations. Your members are looking for guidance. They need context, education, and leadership as they navigate rapid change. By standing back, they risk becoming disconnected from the very people they serve.

How We Can Help

At Redstone, we firmly believe that AI is not something to fear but something to understand and engage with thoughtfully. It will change how we work, but it also has the potential to help us work better, serve better, and lead better.

The goal is not perfection. It’s preparedness.

AI is here. It’s evolving quickly. And it’s going to impact every industry in different ways.

Over the next week, we will be sharing blogs and resources focused on AI in the association space. We encourage everyone, not only our clients, to reach out and connect if you need support navigating this shift.
